MOTS-c — full name "Mitochondrial Open reading frame of the Twelve S rRNA - c" — is a synthetic 16-amino-acid peptide corresponding to a mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) that is encoded within a short open reading frame in the human mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA gene. MDPs are peptides whose coding sequences are found within mitochondrial DNA rather than in nuclear DNA, and MOTS-c is among the earliest such peptides to be characterized. The peptide was first identified and characterized in the laboratory of Pinchas Cohen at the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology.

The peptide has a molecular weight of approximately 2174.5 g/mol and CAS number 1627580-64-6, with the one-letter sequence MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR. On the lot referenced here (MOTS-210-TPL), identity is confirmed by LC-MS through convergent observation across four charge states — [M+5H]⁵⁺ at m/z 435.900, [M+4H]⁴⁺ at 544.600, [M+3H]³⁺ at 725.700, and [M+2H]²⁺ at 1088.500 — each back-calculating to the expected ~2174.5 Da mass. Documented purity by HPLC with UV detection is 99.45%. Third-party characterization was performed by Freedom Diagnostics (USA).
